Entry Clearance for the Parent of a Child Student Visa UK

You can apply for entry clearance for the parent of a child student visa from outside the UK if the child is under 12 and either applying for a Child Student visa UK or already has one. The UK Immigration Rules do not allow a person to apply to switch into the parent of a child student visa from inside the UK, and the initial application must be submitted from outside the UK. Once in the UK on a parent of a child student visa, you can apply for an extension of your parent of a child student visa from inside the UK.

Requirements for the Parent of a Child Student Visa

A person applying for entry clearance for the parent of a child student visa from outside the UK should meet the following requirements of the Immigration Rules:

  • The applicant must submit a valid entry clearance application for the parent of a child student visa from outside the UK.
  • Your child must be aged 4 to 11 when you apply and be attending an independent school in the UK.
  • You must be the only parent accompanying your child in the UK. The child’s other parent must live abroad, and cannot apply to join you in the UK;
  • You must have enough money to support yourself and your child in the UK;
  • You must maintain your main home outside the UK.
  • You plan to leave the UK when your visa expires.
  • Your application should not fall for refusal under the general grounds for refusal as set out in Appendix Suitability of the Immigration Rules.
  • You must provide a Tuberculosis Test certificate if you are a national of a country listed in Appendix Tuberculosis (TB) of the Immigration Rules.

Money To Support Yourself and Your Child

To succeed in your entry clearance application for the parent of a child student visa, you will need to show that you have enough money to support yourself and your child in the UK. You will need £1,560 per month for up to 9 months of your stay. This amount is to support both you and your child. For example, if you are staying for 9 months or longer, you will need to prove you have £14,040 (9 months × £1,560).

You will need an extra £625 per month, up to a maximum of 9 months, for each additional child that accompanies you to the UK. They must be a sibling of your other child and also have a Child Student visa.

Extension of Parent of a Child Student Visa UK

You can apply to extend your visa while in the UK, provided you and your child meet the eligibility requirements. This includes if your child currently has a child student visa. You must apply online for an extension of your parent of a child student visa before your current visa expires.  When you extend your parent of a child student visa, you can stay in the UK until the date your child’s student visa expires, or they turn 12, whichever happens first.

If you have been in the UK for at least 12 months on a valid visa, you do not need to prove you have money to support yourself and your child for your parent of a child student visa extension application.
