Entry clearance for UK visa is the procedure used by the Entry Clearance Officers (ECOs) at British missions overseas to check, before a person arrives in the UK, if that person qualifies under the UK Immigration Rules for entry to the UK.

You must be present in the country from which you are applying for UK visa entry clearance. You cannot apply for UK visa entry clearance while you are present inside the UK.

The Immigration Rules state that persons seeking entry to the UK are to be refused entry by an Immigration Officer if they fail to produce a valid national passport or other document satisfactorily establishing their identity and nationality.

An entry clearance takes the form of a stick-in vignette which is placed in the passport or travel document.

You’ll need to have a tuberculosis (TB) test if you are coming to the UK for more than 6 months and either:

• you live in any of these listed countries
• you have lived in any of these listed countries in the past 6 months

You’ll be given a chest x-ray to test for tuberculosis (TB). If the result of the x-ray is not clear you may also be asked to give a sputum sample (phlegm coughed up from your lungs).

If your test shows that you do not have tuberculosis (TB), you will be given a certificate which is valid for 6 months from the date of your x-ray. Include this certificate with your UK visa application.
