Requirements for Short-Term Study Visa UK
To qualify for a UK short-term study visa, you should meet the following requirements of the Immigration Rules:
Valid Application: You must submit a valid application for a short-term study visa from outside the UK in accordance with the requirements for a valid application as set out in the Immigration Rules.
Age Requirement: You must be aged 16 or over to apply for a short-term study visa in the UK.
English Language Course Requirement: You must prove that you have been accepted onto an English language course that lasts 11 months or less and includes no other subjects.
The applicant must not intend to do any of the following during their time in the UK as a Short-term Student:
- undertake a course of study longer than 11 months; or
- study at an academy or state-funded school; or
- make the UK their main home; or
- work in the UK; or
- engage in any business or professional activities in the UK.
The applicant must intend to leave the UK within 30 days of the end of their English language course, or within 11 months of the end of the course, whichever is sooner.
Accredited Institution Requirement: Your English language course must be with an ‘accredited institution’.
This can be either:
- an accredited UK institution
- an eligible overseas provider, if you’re studying in the UK as part of an overseas course
An accredited institution must either have a student sponsor licence or have a valid accreditation and be listed by one of the following:
- Accreditation Service for International Colleges
- Accreditation UK
- British Accreditation Council
- Education and Training Inspectorate (in Northern Ireland)
- Estyn (in Wales)
- Education Scotland
- Independent Schools Inspectorate
- Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted)
- Office for Students
- Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education
You can also apply for a Short-term study visa if you’re studying at an overseas higher education institution and part of your English language course is in the UK.
Your institution must:
- hold its own national accreditation
- offer no more than half of its educational programme in the UK
- offer programmes that are equivalent to a UK degree
Financial Requirements For A Short-term Student: The applicant must be able to maintain and accommodate themselves adequately without receiving public funds.
- The applicant must have enough funds to meet the cost of their return or onward journey from the UK.
- At the date of application, the applicant must have paid their course fees or have sufficient funds to pay them.
- Funds must be shown as specified in Appendix Finance.
Parental Consent Requirement For A Short-term Student Aged 16 or 17: If the applicant is aged 16 or 17 on the date of application, they must have written consent from:
- both parents; or
- one parent, if that parent has sole legal responsibility for the applicant; or
- the applicant’s legal guardian.
The written consent must confirm support for all of the following:
- the application; and
- the applicant’s living and care arrangements in the UK; and
- the applicant’s travel to, and reception arrangements in, the UK.
Suitability Requirements: The applicant must not fall for refusal under Appendix Part Suitability of the Immigration Rules.
Tuberculosis Certificate Requirement: A person applying for entry clearance as a Short-term Student for more than 6 months must, if Appendix Tuberculosis (TB) of the immigration rules apply, provide a valid medical certificate confirming that they have undergone screening for active pulmonary tuberculosis and that this tuberculosis is not present in them.
